'There's been deception.' County Board stalls airport contract

Dane County Board members have delayed a decision on whether to approve a controversial airport lease with state and federal military officials, seeking more time to address concerns about who would clean up toxic chemical spills. 

In recent weeks, residents, environmental advocates and elected officials have sounded the alarm over the effort to formalize the Wisconsin Air National Guard’s presence at the Dane County Regional Airport. They've argued the new contract could make it hard to hold the military legally responsible for pollution in the future.

On Thursday, the County Board weighed its options for the joint use agreement, which would allow the Air National Guard to use airport facilities in exchange for providing fire and rescue services on the site. Without the deal, the county would have to come up with the money for fire and rescue, an expense that would be passed on to local taxpayers and airline passengers.
