Cape base cleanup: Why an environmentalist flagged 'hidden danger' in EPA report

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says the environmental cleanup at Joint Base Cape Cod is going as scheduled and the measures to contain contamination are working as planned.

The federal agency recently completed a Superfund site review of Joint Base Cape Cod, a five-year overview of the base assessing cleanup sites ranging from PFAS groundwater plumes to areas contaminated by munitions. 

EPA Remedial Project Manager for the base, Robert Lim, said the review is essentially an examination of how well cleanup measures already in place, such as caps on groundwater contamination or soil removal for munitions sites, are working.

“That's kind of what the main concern is with a five-year review, looking at whether something's protective,” Lim said.
