Ft. Jackson ammunition contaminating watershed. What does it mean for base’s neighbors? By Josh Archote Charleston Post and Courier (SC) January 30, 2024 COLUMBIA — Small-caliber ammunition from Fort Jackson firing ranges has been corroding into the Gills Creek Watershed for at least two decades, and it’s now threatening aquatic life in nearby lakes and streams. The high lead levels could impact many low-income and minority communities in lower Richland who rely on the fish they catch in Gills Creek to put food on the table, not just for recreation, according to an environmental group. The watershed, which has faced a myriad of water quality issues, is made up of 115 miles of streams across Richland County, starting near Sesquicentennial State Park and flowing into the Congaree River just above Congaree National Park. In 2017, lower Richland County residents were warned about high mercury levels in largemouth bass populating Gills Creek.
