Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] VOCs: Vapor intrusion at former Wurtsmith Air Force Base (MI) |
Vapor intrusion results shared for several structures within the WAFB boundary by Jenny Haglund Oscoda Press (MI) March 6, 2024 OSCODA – In the second of a three-part story, the following outlines some of the updates from the latest Wurtsmith Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) meeting, such as those regarding the vapor intrusion (VI) remedial investigation (RI) at the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base (WAFB) in Oscoda. Several meeting goers also shared their worries about the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) impacting Van Etten Lake, as summarized last week, while the final installment of this story – to be published next week – will delve deeper into the overall PFAS RI at WAFB. Although PFAS have been a main point of discussion at the site in recent years, these haven’t been the only contaminants of concern throughout the course of WAFB’s lengthy history in the community. Trichloroethylene (TCE), dichloroethylene (DCE) and benzene, for example – all of which have previously been reported on in this publication – have also had a presence due to the various activities and operations at WAFB, and have affected groundwater (GW) and soil. ... Of note, was the fact that exceedances have been detected in three of the four buildings being studied, one of which is also planned to be closed for use until additional data can be collected. … For the entire article, see https://www.iosconews.com/oscoda_press/news/article_c83f33fc-da66-11ee-9dd9-e76130fd18f1.html — Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight A project of the Pacific Studies Center LSiegel@cpeo.org P.O.
