Public Invited To Comment On Military Base Cleanup

Joint Base Cape Cod’s Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC)—which is cleaning up the groundwater pollution at the military base—is seeking public comment on its cleanup efforts and its future plans to involve the community in those remedial actions.

The comment period runs from June 1 to 30, and those comments will be included in a final draft community involvement plan. The plan will be reviewed by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection before a final report is issued by the Air Force.

The 22,000-acre military base has had a contaminant testing and removal program in operation for more than 20 years. In recent years, new sources of contaminants were discovered.

The “new” pollution—believed to have been caused long ago by firefighting chemicals—is in addition to the historic plumes of contaminants that the base, a Superfund site, has been working to clean up.
