PFAS contamination leads Manchester to plan for new water system by Amanda Oglesby Asbury Park Press (NJ) June 5, 2024 MANCHESTER ― The firefighting teams on Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst could not have known decades ago that extinguishing fires during training exercises would have long-lasting impacts on the drinking water of people downstream. For years, drills on the base used firefighting foams that smothered gasoline and jet fuel fires with relative ease. These so-called aqueous film-forming foams used by the military as well as local fire departments across the nation spread dangerous and long-lasting chemicals into the Joint Base's soil, where it remained for years and then spread into the water sources of surrounding towns. These "forever chemicals," or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), now contaminate surface water and some drinking water supplies for the base's neighbors in Manchester and Pemberton townships. … For the entire article, see https://www.app.com/story/news/local/land-environment/2024/06/05/pfas-from-joint-base-spreads-forever-chemicals/73787631007/ — Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight A project of the Pacific Studies Center LSiegel@cpeo.org P.O.
