U.S. Navy sued by environmental group over cleanup of radioactive materials at S.F. shipyard

As long-standing disputes over the adequacy and integrity of the $1.2 billion radiological cleanup of San Francisco’s Bayview Hunters Point Naval Shipyard remain unresolved, advocates calling for increased transparency and higher cleanup standards are making good on their previous threat to sue federal stakeholders.

Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice filed a lawsuit in federal court on Friday naming the U.S. Navy, which is responsible for cleaning the roughly 500-acre shipyard on the city’s southeastern waterfront in preparation for its planned redevelopment, and the Environmental Protection Agency, which oversees the effort.
 
Greenaction has been urging the Navy and EPA to adopt updated remedies and announced its intent to sue in December. The lawsuit accuses the agencies of violating the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act — a federal law governing the cleanup of abandoned hazardous waste, or Superfund, sites and requires selected cleanup remedies and goals to be evaluated and, if required, updated every five years.
