U.S. Navy sued by environmental group over cleanup of radioactive materials at S.F. shipyard By Laura Waxmann, San Francisco Chronicle (CA) June 28, 2024 As long-standing disputes over the adequacy and integrity of the $1.2 billion radiological cleanup of San Francisco’s Bayview Hunters Point Naval Shipyard remain unresolved, advocates calling for increased transparency and higher cleanup standards are making good on their previous threat to sue federal stakeholders. Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice filed a lawsuit in federal court on Friday naming the U.S. Navy, which is responsible for cleaning the roughly 500-acre shipyard on the city’s southeastern waterfront in preparation for its planned redevelopment, and the Environmental Protection Agency, which oversees the effort. Greenaction has been urging the Navy and EPA to adopt updated remedies and announced its intent to sue in December.
