Navy base announces Aug. 15 public meeting for environmental cleanup Public comment period for former skeet range cleanup ends Aug. 31 Sun Newspapers (Seal Beach, CA) August 8, 2024 The Department of the Navy will hold a public meeting and a public review and comment period for the proposed plan to clean up a former skeet range site at the Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach. The public meeting to present the proposed plan will be held at the Seal Beach Mary Wilson Public Library, 707 Electric Ave., Seal Beach, CA 90740 on Thursday, Aug. 15 at 6 p.m. The cleanup site, known as IRP Site 74, is approximately 23 acres and is located within the south-central portion of the base. The site is not accessible to the public. The western portion of the site is within the Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge. IRP Site 74 was once an active skeet and trap range in operation from the late 1960s to the early 1990s. Contamination at the site includes lead shot and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) associated with clay targets. Based on the results of a detailed evaluation of alternatives, the Navy recommends Alternative 4 – Amphibious Excavation – to excavate impacted soil and sediment from IRP Site 74 and reduce risk to wildlife while limiting habitat disturbance. The proposed plan documenting the Navy’s approach to excavate soil and sediment is available for review at: www.navfac.navy.mil/SealBeachNWS. … For the entire article, see https://www.sunnews.org/navy-base-announces-aug-15-public-meeting-for-environmental-cleanup/ — Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight A project of the Pacific Studies Center LSiegel@cpeo.org P.O.
