A year after the Tustin hangar fire: no cause determined and tough choices ahead

A year after a fire destroyed one of Tustin’s two iconic World War II-era blimp hangars,prompting an environmental cleanup that’s eclipsed $100 million in costs, there is still no answer from investigators on what caused the fire and the mishmash of government agencies involved are still charting a course for the shuttered base’s future.

The Orange County Fire Authority has investigated the Nov. 7 fire, but has not determined the cause, a spokesperson with the agency said this week, offering no indication when a conclusion will be made on what happened.

A growing sentiment in Tustin is we’ll never know who, or what, sparked the fire that burned through the north hangar at the heart of the Tustin Marine Corps Air Station.

The U.S. Navy and the city have offered few answers for what proved to be a costly circumstance the night of the blaze: Fire hydrants at the base weren’t working.
