Progress cleaning up Buxton Naval Site Questions emerge at Coast Guard area By Kip Tabb Outer Banks Voice (NC) November 5, 2024 In a wide-ranging community meeting in Buxton on Monday night the Fessenden Center, representatives of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) described progress that has been made in mitigating the contamination coming from a Cold War Naval base. The base’s mission was to listen for enemy submarine activity. The site had been leased from Cape Hatteras National Seashore by the US Navy from 1956 to 1982. After the Navy left, the Coast Guard used the site until 2010. Cleanup for the Naval area falls under the provisions of Formerly Used Defense Site Act (FUDS) which gives responsibility for restoring the site to the USACE.
