UXO TRACK

SERDP & ESTCP 2024 Symposium

DECEMBER 3 – 6, 2024 | WASHINGTON, D.C.
The underwater environment poses new challenges for remediating UXO, with water causing unpredictable effects on explosives and posing more difficulties in locating and classifying munitions than on land. These sessions at the DoD Energy and Environment Innovation Symposium will highlight efforts to develop and transition emerging technologies to detect, classify, and localize UXO in the underwater environment.
Spotlight on the First Live Site Underwater UXO Detection and Classification Demonstration (Reid State Park)
Tuesday, December 3, 1:45pm – 4:45pm

As ESTCP transitions the focus of its research on underwater munitions to technology transfer, a series of Live Site Demonstrations have been planned. The first Live Site Demonstration was conducted in two phases at a Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) at Reid State Park in Georgetown, Maine. The session will present results from multiple surveys to include drone magnetometer, focused characterization with the crawler-based advanced geophysical classification systems, and mobility seeding. A regulator and stakeholder perspective on the work will close out the session.

  • Dr. Greg Schultz, White River Technologies
  • Dr. Carter DuVal, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory
  • Iver McLeod, Maine Department of Environmental Protection
  • John Jackson, SERDP & ESTCP
  • Haylee Parsons, Reid State Park
Understanding Munition Burial Behavior and its Limitations for Remediation Strategies
Wednesday, December 4, 9:00am – 12:00pm

The presence of underwater UXO poses threats to marine ecosystems, infrastructure, and human safety. A crucial aspect of UXO management is understanding their burial behavior, as munitions can become buried over time due to various natural and anthropogenic processes. This session aims to review efforts modeling munition burial behavior and its limitations as a remediation strategy.

  • Bryan Harre, Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center
  • Andy Schwartz, Army
  • Dr. Sylvia Rodriguez-Abudo, University of Puerto Rico
  • Dr. Peter Menzel, Corvus Works GmbH
  • Dr. Nina Stark, University of Florida

Advancing the Munitions Response Program to Live Site Demonstrations
Wednesday, December 4, 1:45pm – 4:45pm

This session is a continuation of the Reid State Park Live Site Demonstration session with a focus on future work. Presentations on some of the field-deployable systems designed to enhance the efficiency, safety, and effectiveness of munitions response operations in various environments will be showcased. In addition to the technology perspective, a look at the data needs from the end users and a path to providing guidance will be presented.
