Kennedy High School in Richmond closed after toxic vapors found
Students were slated to return to campus on Aug. 18, but may have to start school somewhere else

Kennedy High School in Richmond closed Monday due to toxic vapors identified underneath the campus. Officials on Tuesday said they’re still not sure if they’ll be able to reopen when students return in about two weeks.

In an email to families, West Contra Costa County Unified School District Superintendent Cheryl Cotton said the district decided to close after an environmental test revealed “levels of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) underneath the site,” Cotton wrote.

District spokeswoman Liz Sanders told this news organization via email Tuesday it’s possible the district may reopen the school in time for the expected Aug. 18 return to campus, but alternative plans are being considered.
