EPA launches new system to clean groundwater at Pennsylvania superfund site

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency began building a $39 million thermal treatment system to clean contaminated groundwater at the Valmont TCE Superfund Site in Luzerne County, PA, on July 15.

The site is a former upholstery manufacturing plant. Chromotex Inc. leased the property from 1978 to 2001 and applied fluorocarbon stain repellants to fabrics. These repellants contained trichloroethene, or TCE. TCE is a nonflammable, colorless liquid that’s used as a solvent to remove grease from metal or as an ingredient in adhesives and spot removers.

Groundwater contaminated with TCE was discovered around the Luzerne County site in October 1987 after samples were taken from private wells. Historical spills at the site have contaminated water 80 feet below the facility.
