Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] FUEL, FORMER SITES: "Deep excavation to be carried out at Buxton Beach [NC] naval site" |
Deep excavation to be carried out at Buxton Beach naval site by Nick Broadway WAVY TV-10 News (Norfolk, NC) September 19, 2025 BUXTON, N.C. — Crews are getting ready to dig deeper than before at the site of an old naval base along the Buxton Beach. Remnants of the old base are being blamed for years of oil contamination. The Army Corps of Engineers is now bringing in heavy machinery to dig deep into the whole length of this site. They will not stop until all the oil contamination they can find is gone. Last year, Army Corps crews removed countless truckloads of concrete, pipes and oil-soaked sand. By this year, they left the place looking like a pristine ocean front. The next step was to carry out comprehensive sampling of the entire site. This would reveal if any more oil and naval structure remained deep underground. However, mother nature did not wait for this process. In early August, strong winds swept away much of the beach, unleashing more oil and structure beneath. Then right as the Army Corps came down to deal with this emergency, Hurricane Erin swept up even more sand — revealing even more pollution. … For the entire story, see https://www.wavy.com/news/north-carolina/obx/deep-excavation-to-be-carried-out-at-buxton-beach-naval-site/ — Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight A project of the Pacific Studies Center LSiegel@cpeo.org P.O.
