Firefighters navigate unexploded munitions threat at Boise's Military Reserve
Crews tackling the Claremont Fire in Boise face hidden danger from unexploded military ordnance, altering tactics to prioritize safety while battling the wildfire.

BOISE, Idaho — As firefighters worked to contain the Claremont Fire in Boise's Military Reserve, they faced a danger most people couldn't see.

Beneath the burned grass and dirt lies an area designated as an unexploded ordnance, or UXO, zone, a remnant of the Military Reserve's past as a U.S. Army training range in the early 1900s.

Those unexploded munitions continue to shape how firefighters respond to wildfires more than a century later.

"It changes our tactics," Boise Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Brad Bolin said.
