Brunswick & Topsham Water District unveil $20M PFAS treatment facility

A $20 million water treatment facility in Brunswick has officially ramped up operations after years of planning.

Thursday afternoon the Brunswick & Topsham Water District hosted an open house for its New Jordan Avenue PFAS Treatment Facility.

Brunswick & Topsham Water District General Manager Craig Douglas said the district’s testing for PFAS has evolved over time as detection methods and regulatory standards changed.

“When we tested for PFAS back in 2016 we didn't find any but as the detection limits improved, we did find some in 2021 and as the regulatory limits dropped it became apparent that we needed treatment here,” Douglas said.

  Prev by Date: [Military Environmental Forum] VOCs: FORMER SITES: The delay is due to KDHE conducting a Data Gap Analysis, an internal technical review the agency has said is warranted to verify its original site investigation and findings. The SPEs have been coordinating closely with KDHE leadership, including a July 2026 meeting in Topeka with KDHE Secretary Janet Stanek and senior staff, to support timely completion of that review. KDHE has indicated the analysis is expected by October 2026. Public health remains the SPEs' top priority throughout this temporary delay. Since the Corrective Action Decision was issued in 2019, the SPEs have consistently monitored the groundwater and air quality at and around the site. The most recent monitoring event occurred in August 2026.
