A point of clarification regarding the response to Megan Reha's question about the number of brownfield sites in the US- The respondee stated that "the US EPA is limited to National Priority List sites and some other sites of federal interest, a very limited number of sites." This statement within the context of the response could be misconstrued to mean that the US EPA Brownfields Program handles NPL sites. Although the US EPA Brownfields Program does derive its authority from CERCLA, NPL sites are handled by the Superfund Program through the formal Superfund process (noting that the lead for these sites may be at the federal or state level). The US EPA Brownfields Program explicitly does not deal with NPL sites and as a matter of policy does not deal with NPL-caliber sites, although the distinction between NPL-caliber and non NPL-caliber sites is subject to debate.
