MADISON--Businesses that volunteer to clean up and redevelop underused or
contaminated properties can now participate in a state insurance program to
cover unforeseen expenses if the cleanup is not successful, state officials
said Tuesday.

The new program is designed to promote the voluntary cleanup of brownfields, or
vacant property that may have been polluted by a previous occupant, Gov. Scott
McCallum said.

The insurance program was approved by the Natural Resources Board on Feb. 28.

Department of Natural Resources Secretary Darrell Bazzell said any business
that uses a DNR-approved plan to investigate and clean up contaminated property
can participate in the new program.
