Blanchard, Department of Commerce Secretary, (608) 266-7088 GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES $4.4 MILLION IN BROWNFIELDS GRANTS Grant money will help reclaim contaminated industrial land. MADISON – Gov. Scott McCallum announced today that $4.4 million in Brownfields Grants were awarded to 14 projects in southeastern Wisconsin for economic development and environmental remediation. Gov. McCallum said the projects would create up to 939 new jobs, bring $49.1 million in new investment, restore more than 355 acres to productivity and spur a $72.7 million increase in property values. “The Brownfields Grant Program has a proven track record of developing partnerships to reclaim vacant industrial land for new development,” Gov. McCallum said. “Abandoned and environmentally-contaminated sites have been a major obstacle to inner city and small city redevelopment throughout Wisconsin.” The following summarizes the successful proposals: BADGER ASSOCIATION OF THE BLIND, Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, $200,000 Brownfields Grant. The Badger Association of the Blind will expand and renovate its current facility and construct a new parking lot on a former landfill and refuse transfer site. It will use its grant for demolition of the buildings on the 5-acre site and construction of an asphalt parking lot. The project will create ten managerial, administrative, and clerical positions at an average wage of $14.42/hour and will leverage $156,641 of additional investment. CITY OF BARABOO, Baraboo, Sauk County $250,000 Brownfields Grant. The City of Baraboo will use its grant for environmental remediation. It will construct a City Services Center on the site of a 9.9-acre downtown salvage yard. The project will help to improve the City’s image to tourists and business prospects and will leverage $598,829 in additional investment. CITY OF BURLINGTON, Burlington, Racine County, $300,000 Brownfields Grant. The City of Burlington is redeveloping its downtown. The project will provide for a new 188-unit residential complex, a city park, and a new four-lane boulevard. The grant will be used for remediation and infrastructure development. The value of the property will increase from $223,900 to $14.8 million. The project will leverage $18.1 million in additional investment. CAMBECK PETROLEUM CORP., Walworth, Walworth County, $150,000 Brownfields Grant. Cambeck Petroleum Corp. plans to redevelop a 0.8-acre site on Highway 67 for a new convenience market. It will use its grant for site investigation, remediation and demolition. The value of the property will increase from $230,700 to $1.2 million. The project will create ten managerial and clerk positions at $9.69/hour and will leverage $226,000 in additional investment. CITY OF CUDAHY AND GATEWAY REAL ESTATE, LLC, Cudahy, Milwaukee County, $1,000,000 Brownfields Grant. The City of Cudahy and Gateway Real Estate, LLC will remediate and redevelop a 38-acre site for retail, commercial and industrial uses, including a Patrick Cudahy manufacturing facility expansion. The value of the property will increase from $451,200 to $18 million. The project will create 150 production positions at an average wage of $10/hour and will leverage $8 million in additional investment. CITY OF KENOSHA, Kenosha, Kenosha County, $100,000 Brownfields Grant. The City of Kenosha will to remediate and redevelop a former manufacturing site into a park. It will use its grant for improvements to the 4.75-acre site. The project will leverage $50,000 in additional investment. CITY OF MIDDLETON, Middleton, Dane County, $50,000 Brownfields Grant. The City wants to stimulate downtown redevelopment along a University Avenue site. It will use its grant to remove contaminated soil from the 3-acre site. The project will create up to 500 office and retail jobs, and leverage $1.8 million in additional investment. The value of the property will increase from $913,400 to $6.1 million. RACINE COUNTY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION, Racine, Racine County, $250,000 Brownfields Grant. Racine County Economic Development Corporation wants to redevelop a 2.38-acre site for a new 17,500-square-foot central city grocery store. The grant will be used for site purchase, investigation, and remediation. The value of the property will increase from $483,400 to $1.5 million. The project will create 14.5 manager, checker, and stocker positions at $12.05/hour and will leverage $425,000 in additional investment. RAINMAKER ENTERPRISES, INC., Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, $100,000 Brownfields Grant. Rainmaker Enterprises, Inc. plans to renovate a six-story former shoe manufacturing facility and warehouse and convert it into 59 condominiums. The project includes underground and outside parking and landscaping. It will use its grant for site investigation and remediation. The value of the property will increase from $331,000 to $9 million. The project will leverage $3.6 million in additional investment. REVENUE DEVELOPMENT, LLC, Madison, Dane County, $400,000 Brownfields Grant. Revenue Development, LLC hopes to target biotech and technology related industries by redeveloping a former landfill site in the Town of Madison. The grant will be used for clearing, grading and preparation of the 17-acre site. The value of the property will increase from $900,000 to $9.6 million. The project will create up to 155 biotech positions and will leverage $4.2 million in additional investment. SHERMAN PERK, LLC, Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, $100,000 Brownfields Grant. Sherman Perk, LLC wants to renovate a .16 acre blighted former service station into a gourmet coffee shop. It will use its grant for rehabilitation work of the former Art Deco style service station. The value of the property will increase from zero to $285,000. The project will create two service manager positions at an average wage of $11.54/hour and will leverage $180,221 in additional investment. CITY OF WAUPUN, Waupun, Dodge County, $100,000 Brownfields Grant. The City of Waupun will convert a 2.25-acre industrial site into a city park. It will use its grant for remediation activities. The redevelopment will eliminate a health and safety hazard. The project will leverage $141,740 in additional investment. CITY OF WEST ALLIS, West Allis, Milwaukee County, $500,000 Brownfields Grant. The City of West Allis plans to develop a shopping center on 9.78 acres of the Pressed Steel Tank Company site. The grant will be used for site remediation. Property value will increase from $2 million to $15.9 million. The project will create 63 managerial, clerical and labor positions at an average wage of $12.18/hour and will leverage $5.3 million in additional investment. WISPAR, LLP, Edgerton, Rock County, $900,000 Brownfields Grant. Wispar, LLP, plans to renovate a vacant blighted building to house a new high-tech plastic manufacturing operation. It will use its grant for building rehabilitation on the 34-acre site. The value of the property will increase from $500,100 to $2.9 million. The project will create 190 office, technical, and warehouse positions at an average wage of $14.42/hour and will leverage $6.4 million in additional investment. COMMERCE administers the Brownfields Grant Program, which provides grants to municipalities, local development corporations, and the private sector to support assessment, remediation, and return of contaminated lands to productive use.
