Subject: [CPEO-BIF] Community Environmental Health Assessments
I've reported extensively on CPEO's Community Impact Statement (CIS)
exercises and occasionally discussed the Community Environmental Health
Assessment methodology developed by the National Association of City and
County Health Officials (NACCHO). I've run across a new approach, more
complete than the CIS but not as detailed as the NACCHO handbook. It
should prove useful to activists who wish to organize their own health assessments.

The Washington, D.C.-based Environmental Law Institute (ELI) has
published its own "Community Environmental Health Assessment Workbook: A
Guide to Evaluating Your Community's Health and Finding Ways to Improve
It." Based on ELI's work in the District, the Workbook is designed to
provide community leaders with the tools they need to organize
community-based environmental health assessments. It explains the value
of the assessment, gives a step by step guide, and suggests next steps.
It calls upon the project team to define the assessment's scope.

For more information, please contact Paul Locke <locke@eli.org> or
Devon Payne-Sturges <payne_sturges@eli.org> or call ELI's Center for
Public Health and Law at 202-939-3800.
