On the broad concrete apron in front of the historic building and control tower 1,000 guests watched the impressive ceremony. Navy officers and enlisted personnel, a color guard and navy band, all in sparkling white uniforms, along with federal and local government officials, took part in the emotional official shutdown of the Glenview Naval Air Station (GNAS) after 60 years of active service. Since that day in mid-September of 1995 concrete runways and asphalt roads have been cut up, numerous environmentally damaged sites on the airfield restored to non-hazardous condition, utilities removed, and most of the base’s 100 buildings demolished.
