Neighborhood impacted by toxic contamination

People living downhill from Emerson Power Transmission in Ithaca are
reacting to news that their health and homes may be in danger of toxic contamination.

The roller chain company's most recent ground water tests show
trichloroethylene (TCE) levels exceed state standards more than five
thousand fold.

TCE can cause central nervous system disorders, heart problems and cancer.

The contamination stems from a leak discovered back in 1987.

The company has been operating a remediation system approved by the DEC
for eight years, but it isn't working. 

News of current contamination levels is already having a serious impact
on the neighborhood.
