Toxic chemical levels rising in condo soil tests

MILFORD - New soil tests at the Caswell Cove condominiums found levels
of a chemical contaminant  there are increasing, officials said Thursday.

The amount of trichloroethylene, a chemical solvent that is a suspected
carcinogen, is now  more than 140 parts per billion under Building 5 of
the 14-building complex, a sharp  increase from eight months ago.

Results released Thursday from soil gas tests taken on May 25 show
remediation is required  for Building 5, officials said. The first four
buildings already have soil venting systems  installed by the state
Department of Environmental Protection.

"It is disturbing that the plume has extended down that far," said Dr.
A. Dennis McBride, city  health director. "What goes on with groundwater
is somewhat of an inexact science."

The safe level of TCE in drinking water is 5 parts per billion. A
measurement of more than  140 ppb in the soil on a residential property
requires a cleanup, DEP officials said.
