Air pollution tested in Hillcrest

DEC seeks more data on outdoor impact

HILLCREST -- Evidence of an unusual kind of air pollution was the focus
of more testing in the neighborhood Friday. 

Contractors working for the state Department of Environmental
Conservation collected a dozen samples of outdoor air along Chenango
Street and other spots in Hillcrest. The devices used to collect the
samples -- metal spherical canisters set on lawns and near some storm
sewer grates -- were put out Friday morning and collected Friday
afternoon. 

Results are expected in about 30 days, according to a work plan filed
with the DEC. It will take several more weeks to verify and interpret
the data. 

The tests are looking for a class of chemicals called volatile organic
compounds -- commonly used as cleaning agents by many Southern Tier
industries -- in outdoor air. 

The solvents include trichloroethylene, or TCE, which has been found in
the ground, water and air within a 320-acre residential and industrial
area in the middle of this hamlet of about 2,700 people.
