Pollutants found near pipeline break site TCE, PCE in soil below houses not believed to be from rupture By Joe Burchell ARIZONA DAILY STAR September 25, 2004 Low levels of PCE and TCE have been found in the ground beneath the 400 homes in two West Side subdivisions where a gasoline pipeline ruptured last year, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality revealed Friday. The contamination was discovered by Kinder Morgan workers during testing for the cleanup of the gas-line break near Grant and Silverbell roads, said David Esposito, southern region director of the agency. He said the gas-line break is not believed to be the source of the contamination, however. Although both chemicals are known carcinogens, Esposito said the contamination appears to be at low enough levels it's not considered an immediate health threat. Early next month the state will begin collecting soil samples throughout the Silver Creek I and II subdivisions to get more information about the level of contamination, how widespread it is and to try to identify the source. ... for the entire article, seehttp://www.dailystar.com/dailystar/dailystar/40559.php -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Brownfields mailing list Brownfields@list.cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org/mailman/listinfo/brownfields | |
