Low levels of PCE and TCE have been found in the ground beneath the 400
homes in two West Side subdivisions where a gasoline pipeline ruptured
last year, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality revealed
Friday.

The contamination was discovered by Kinder Morgan workers during testing
for the cleanup of the gas-line break near Grant and Silverbell roads,
said David Esposito, southern region director of the agency.

He said the gas-line break is not believed to be the source of the
contamination, however.

Although both chemicals are known carcinogens, Esposito said the
contamination appears to be at low enough levels it's not considered an
immediate health threat.

Early next month the state will begin collecting soil samples throughout
the Silver Creek I and II subdivisions to get more information about the
level of contamination, how widespread it is and to try to identify the
source.
