Cleaning Up

One aspect of the Emerson clean up seems to have been cleared up; recent
testing of the Seneca St. excavation soil indicates that contamination
at the bottom of the hill is well under target levels.

Testing of air quality in 50 selected homes by Emerson's engineers has
begun and should be finished by the end of next week. This is a good
time of year to do it, as doors and windows are closed and heating
systems tend to draw air up from basements, the source of indoor air
contamination, said John Anderson of the County Health Department.
Besides judging contamination levels in each tested residence, the DEC
will be looking for significant drop offs in levels around the presumed
edge of the plume.

Failure to find lower numbers indicates that the contamination covers a
wider area than thought and that more testing is required.
