Latest tests show pollution not entering school But high concentrations in ground near Snapp site baffle experts BY TOM WILBER Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin (NY) November 30, 2004 ENDICOTT -- Recent test results indicate a cancer-causing agent detected in high concentrations in the ground around the Jennie F. Snapp Middle School is absent inside the building, a state scientist said Monday. But scientists are baffled by results of samples taken last summer that show levels of the pollution that is vastly higher in the ground at the school and the surrounding neighborhood than anywhere else in the village. Tetrachloroethene, also known as perchloroethylene or PCE, was consistently found between 5,000 and 25,000 micrograms per cubic meter in dozens of samples from the ground, according to a report from The Shaw Group -- an environmental contractor -- to the state Department of Environmental Conservation. That's as much as 20 times greater than soil concentrations of TCE -- a similar type of chemical -- affecting hundreds of buildings several blocks to the east. … For the entire article, see http://www.pressconnects.com/today/topstories/stories/to113004s133400.shtml -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 http://www.cpeo.org
