Gates plans TCE cleanup 
Solvent taints groundwater on parcel up for rezoning

Gates Corp. intends next month to begin cleaning up a hazardous
industrial solvent discovered on the eastern portion of its former
Denver campus, a Gates official said Wednesday. 

"Our goal as a company right now in having uncovered this issue is to
get into the field and clean it up as soon as possible," Tom Reeve,
Gates' director of corporate development, told a Denver City Council committee.

Gates hopes to rezone the 30-acre parcel and sell it next year, but
first the company will lead the removal of trichloroethylene, or TCE,
from the former rubber-plant site, he said. TCE is a highly volatile
liquid used as an industrial cleaner. Breathing small amounts of its
vapors may cause headaches, lung irritation and dizziness.
