Different responses in Tier, E. Fishkill stir up debate BY TOM WILBER Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin (NY) February 20, 2005 The state is setting a dangerous precedent by allowing Southern Tier residents to be exposed to concentrations of toxic pollution nearly 14 times greater than what the federal government is allowing in East Fishkill homes, advocates said last week. Polluted neighborhoods in Endicott and Hillcrest are at the center of a growing national debate about trichloroethylene, or TCE, pushing into homes through a process called vapor intrusion. How much is too much? "TCE in your house just plain ol' doesn't belong there," said Bruce Oldfield, a resident of Hillcrest. The state is testing more than 50 houses there for gases from a subterranean plume of the chemical coming from nearby industry. ...
