Most attention, in redeveloping sites with shallow contamination with
volatile organic compounds such as TCE, is paid to the eventual
occupants of redeveloped properties. It's important also to protect the
construction workers who may come into direct contact with the
contamination, as described in this article. While construction workers
may be exposed for a much shorter time than residents, they may also be
exposed to much higher concentrations. - LS ********* Hearings on contaminated land completed Officials expected to recommend stepping up testing, penalties DIRK PERREFORT Connecticut Post August 4, 2005 MILFORD — Hearings completed Wednesday on trichloroethylene contamination at the Milford Power Co. plant and surrounding sites will result in recommendations for increased water testing and stiffer penalties for negligent companies, House Speaker James Amann said Wednesday. "We need to have better postings at work sites so employees know what kind of contaminants they're dealing with," Amann said shortly after the last in a series of four hearings held before the General Assembly. "There should also be stiffer fines for companies that fail to post these warnings." Concerns about TCE surfaced in August 2003 when the Connecticut Post reported that construction workers building the Milford Power Co. plant in 1999 suffered from illnesses they believed were associated with exposure to the toxic chemical. A blasting superintendent died last year after battling a rare blood cancer he believed was caused by TCE exposure.
