Review questions pollution guideline

TCE risks require stricter standard, scientists contend

Evidence of risks associated with exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE)
supports a stricter state standard to protect residents living in a
polluted area like Endicott, according to a Binghamton University
professor who was part of a team of independent scientists charged to
review a controversial guideline for the chemical.

A more protective standard would come with greater costs to taxpayers
and businesses funding cleanups that must meet higher standards.
Advocates point out there is an immeasurable economic and moral return
to saving lives and keeping people healthy. While stopping short of
saying the guideline -- set by the state Department of Health in October
2003 -- is unsafe, the panel concluded that evidence supports a case for
making the standard five times more restrictive, said James Dix, a
chemistry professor who sat on the board. The conclusions will be in a
final report expected in coming weeks.
