Review questions pollution guideline TCE risks require stricter standard, scientists contend BY TOM WILBER Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin (NY) September 4, 2005 Evidence of risks associated with exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE) supports a stricter state standard to protect residents living in a polluted area like Endicott, according to a Binghamton University professor who was part of a team of independent scientists charged to review a controversial guideline for the chemical. A more protective standard would come with greater costs to taxpayers and businesses funding cleanups that must meet higher standards. Advocates point out there is an immeasurable economic and moral return to saving lives and keeping people healthy. While stopping short of saying the guideline -- set by the state Department of Health in October 2003 -- is unsafe, the panel concluded that evidence supports a case for making the standard five times more restrictive, said James Dix, a chemistry professor who sat on the board. The conclusions will be in a final report expected in coming weeks. ...
