Subject: [CPEO-BIF] Vapor testing at Norco schools

I?ve looked at the data showing vapor intrusion at the Norco High School,
and I can?t understand why regulators are hesitant to test all classrooms.
There is significant variation among the classrooms already tested,
suggesting the presence of preferential pathways. The best way to identify
them is to sample each room.

It may also prove useful to substitute real-time or near-real-time sampling
techniques for the current Summa canister method, which is slow and does a
poor job of pinpointing pathways. A well designed near-real-time sampling
program may prove less expensive than a drawn-out Summa campaign.

State wavers on full testing
School district OKs plan at Norco High but school still considered low risk

NORCO - Although the Corona-Norco school board on Tuesday unanimously
approved testing for airborne contaminants inside all Norco High School
classrooms, state officials aren't making any guarantees that it will
happen.

The state Department of Toxic Substances Control said Wednesday that for
now they will continue their step--step technique, sampling a few rooms at
a time and waiting for results, instead of testing the whole school all at
once. DTSC is overseeing cleanup for the 425-acre former site of Wyle
Laboratories Inc. The El-Segundo based engineering company tested rocket
motors and electronics and developed products for the defense industry
there for 50 years.

If chemicals are found through this phased approach, DTSC will conduct more
testing. It's the method they've been using on Norco streets and homes
since testing began a few years ago.
