Community grows more worried

ITHACA — As South Hill residents continued to push for more action, 
officials from Emerson Power Transmission continued to claim they are 
working as fast as possible to address chemical contamination in the 
neighborhood.

This back and forth characterized much of a meeting Wednesday night that 
outlined areas no longer under consideration for testing and new testing 
areas in the neighborhood and at the facility.

Emerson plans to include 18 new homes just north of the Phase III 
testing in its next round. Phase III, which was primarily between East 
Spencer Street and the east side of Turner Place, north of Hillview 
Place, will have 23 of its 34 homes examined for a second time.

This testing is intended to see if soil gas vapors have infiltrated 
people's homes from toxic chemicals used at the former Morse Chain 
plant, now owned by Emerson. The primary toxin of concern is 
tricholorethylene, a chemical degreaser and potential carcinogen, that 
was used to clean chains manufactured at the plant decades ago.
