Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] Hinchey Blasts NY State Department of Health |
Office of Congressman Maurice Hinchey For Immediate Release February 15, 2006 Hinchey Blasts New York State Dept. of Health For Inaction On TCE Says Agency's Failure To Act Is "Mind-Boggling"; Calls For Immediate Steps To Save Lives Of State Residents Endicott, NY - Frustrated by the New York State Department of Health's (NYSDOH) failure to revise air safety guidelines to protect state residents from trichloroethylene (TCE) contamination, Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) today blasted the agency's commissioner for her inaction. In a letter to NYSDOH Commissioner Antonia Novello, Hinchey said the agency's failure to act on TCE contamination "has been nothing short of mind-boggling." "Thousands of people across New York State are suffering as a result of the failure of the Department of Health to be more realistic and reasonable concerning the amounts of poisonous gas they are compelled to breath in their homes," Hinchey wrote to Novello. "Your refusal to revise the air guideline for trichloroethylene (TCE) laden air in domestic circumstances is the major case in point. And this refusal is even more inexplicable in the context of the extensive scientific research and resulting compelling evidence of the toxic nature of this airborne contaminant." ...
