More of pollutant found at schoolBy LAURA RICO and PAIGE AUSTIN Riverside Press-Enterprise (CA) June 30, 2006 The California Department of Toxic Substances Control found that indoor air samples taken from a Norco High School building contained low concentrations of vinyl chloride, according to test results evaluated this week. Previous tests of the building found no traces of the cancer-causing compound. "There really is no risk to the children and faculty," said Rafat Abbasi, a senior project manager with the department. "But the fact that vinyl chloride was detected is a source of concern for us." The building, known on campus as building B and D, houses a library, classrooms and a science lab. Vinyl chloride is a breakdown product of trichloroethylene (TCE), the main pollutant at Wyle Labs, a hazardous testing facility that closed down two years ago. The department is trying to pinpoint the source of contamination by requiring additional tests of soil gas, groundwater and indoor air. ...
