Brownfield Cleanup A MustEditorial Hartford Courant (CT) July 2 2006 One of the unfortunate aspects of the eminent domain battle in New London's Fort Trumbull neighborhood was that it obscured a successful program on an adjacent property. ... There have been other successes in developing brownfields across the state, from Waterbury's Brass Mill Center to Hartford's Learning Corridor and Adriaen's Landing to Windham Mills in Willimantic. Since 1993, the state has invested $320 million in brownfield remediation, which has leveraged $700 million in private investment and brought 740 acres back into use. By reusing that land, according to a federal formula, more than 3,000 acres of greenfield land have been spared the bulldozer. Although there have also been some federal and many privately funded brownfield remediations in the state, there is still much to do; still hundreds of industrial and commercial sites that must be cleaned and reused if the state is to rebuild density in town centers to halt the low-density sprawl development that is inexorably consuming the state's fields and farms. A state statute that went into effect Saturday should help. ...
