Officials to expand search for TCE Endicott, Hillcrest, Union sites targeted By Tom Wilber Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin (NY) November 11, 2006 The search for hazardous chemicals leaching into Southern Tier homes and businesses -- already involving at least 1,000 Southern Tier properties -- will continue to broaden in coming months, state officials said this week. Scientists will expand their search this winter for hazardous fumes from underground pollution to include at least 50 additional buildings in Endicott, Union and Hillcrest, said Diane Carlton, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Environmental Conservation. Additionally, the air in about 100 area properties tested last winter will be re-sampled. This will be the fifth year of a comprehensive search for trichloroethylene (TCE) vapors in Southern Tier homes and businesses near industrial sites tainted by the common industrial solvent. But it is the first year scientists will use a slightly revised policy in determining acceptable levels of TCE finalized by the state Department of Health last month. ...
