New measures to tackle old pollutantsROB VARNON Connecticut Post November 11, 2006 Decades ago, Hawie Manufacturing Co.'s nine buildings would have been full of workers turning out metal garter and suspender clips. But today, global competition has cut deeply into Hawie's business, and only a handful of workers operate the kick presses in one building on River Road. The company can't even tear down the unused buildings and lease the space to other businesses, because there is asbestos in the walls and cyanide under the floor. ... But, he may be about to catch a break. A new Connecticut law will give manufacturers like Hawie access to state-funded programs for brownfield remediation. Under Public Act 06-184, manufacturers who can prove they followed the best practices of the day for disposal of contaminates - and had no criminal intent when dumping - are eligible for state aid. ...
