New contamination woes delay school City K-8 facility may not open until 2010 BY ROSE Y. COLÓN Trenton Times (NJ) July 26, 2007TRENTON -- Had things gone according to plan, children and teachers would be walking the halls of a brand new Martin Luther King Jr.- Jefferson School this fall. Already three years behind schedule, the 800-student school has yet to be built and may not even open until 2010, state officials said yesterday. Although the removal of 36,000 tons of contaminated material used in the school's foundation caused major delays in construction and resulted in the demolition of the partly-built school last year, a decision by the city school board has prompted further delays. Troubled by a batch of polluted soil that existed on the site prior to the school construction in 2004, board members decided this week to remove that soil as well, instead of being capped with concrete, which the state Schools Construction Corp proposed. ...
