Washington state seeks input on Cadet plume clean-up

The state Department of Ecology has approved the Port of Vancouver's
plan for completing cleanup of a toxic plume laying beneath a west
Vancouver neighborhood.

Cadet Manufacturing, an electric-heater maker, once used a solvent
called trichloroethylene, or TCE, in its production process. The
company's headquarters near the Port is less than a half-mile north of
the Columbia River and adjacent to Swan Manufacturing, a defunct company
that once used TCE and which also has remnants of a toxic plume underground.

The plume is now under part of the Fruit Valley neighborhood where it
poses a small risk to indoor air in some of the homes, the state
Department of Health has said. The community's drinking water comes from
a different source.
