City likely to demolish old plastics building By Craig Sauer Portage Daily Register (WI) February 27, 2008 The city is likely to demolish an old plastics building near the municipal airport this summer on what was known as the Mael property, City Administrator Larry Plaster said Monday. With the help of a $55,000 federal brownfield grant, distributed by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Plaster said the city will remove the building located at 1125 Silver Lake Drive and the asbestos it is said to be contaiminated with in order to sell the property. "Utimately the goal is for redevelopment," Plaster said following a Finance and Administration Committee meeting on Monday. "The airport is right there and the city is still in the process of looking to move that, not that they need to go hand in hand ... so it has some redevelopment value for the city." ... The city had sued the Maels over perchloroethylene contamination in the city's adjacent Well 6, allegedly stemming from the Silver Lake Drive property. According to court documents, previous business operations on the land caused the contamination. ...
