Groups Appeal Brownfield Court ruling

(Albany, N.Y.) AP -- Environmental groups are appealing a state Supreme
Court judge's ruling that upheld brownfield cleanup standards issued by
the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

Judge Christopher Cahill in Albany ruled in February that the DEC had
correctly implemented the brownfields law that encourages companies to
clean up and reuse polluted sites such as former gas stations and
abandoned factories.

Environmental Advocates, the New York Public Interest Research Group,
the Sierra Club, and Citizens Environmental Coalition say what was "once
hailed as landmark environmental legislation" has become "watered down"
and fails to protect public health and the environment.
