LaPorte sees hope at old site BY STAN MADDUX Gary Post Tribune (IN) April 4, 2008 LaPORTE -- A developer has signed a contract to turn the area surrounding the former Allis Chalmers brownfield site near LaPorte's downtown into an outlet for major retailers. "This is our first step back," said Tim Gropp, executive director of the Greater LaPorte Economic Development Corp. Despite the dotted line being signed, there are no guarantees. But at least the development group can say to the nationally known retailers already lined up to build, "This is the green light. Let's go," said LaPorte City Attorney Don Baugher. Under terms of the contract signed this week, Reliance Capital of Cincinnati has agreed to develop the 156,000 square feet into retail space and invest $15 million in the project. ...
