Lead cleanup at airport planned Regan Kohler Washburn County Register (WI) August 14, 2008SHELL LAKE - The Shell Lake City Council addressed the lead remediation at the airport during their meeting Monday, Aug. 11, in city hall.
The now-disbanded trap club had used the airport for shooting, and lead and arsenic from the targets got lodged in the soil, contaminating it. The council has been looking into remediation, for safe removal of the lead, for a long time. Meanwhile, the airport is undergoing major improvements.
At last month’s council meeting, three options for cleaning the site up were discussed. One was to treat the contaminated soil on-site and then take it to the Sarona landfill, and another was to haul it as hazardous waste to a special landfill in Michigan. The estimated costs were between $18,000-$1 million, and $2.7 million, respectively.
The third option, which was chosen at the plan commission’s meeting after information was given by the Department of Natural Resources, was to excavate and encapsulate the contaminated soil into a container with special lining and bury it elsewhere on-site. According to the minutes of the plan commission meeting, this option was deemed most feasible, at $125,000-$135,000, and would not affect nearby property values.
