Wastewater site redevelopment plan progressing

WHITEHALL TWP. -- A loan application and a thorough environmental review of the former Muskegon County wastewater site in Whitehall Township are the next steps in a redevelopment effort that may result in an alternative energy production plant and housing.

The township's brownfield committee is overseeing the financing of any necessary cleanup before the site's sale to local industrialist Scott Erdman is completed. The committee's next meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sept. 22 at Whitehall Township Hall, 7644 Durham.

Brownfield sites are abandoned, idle or underused industrial and commercial properties where expansion or redevelopment is hindered or complicated by real or perceived environmental problems. Brownfields present challenges to potential developers, whether contamination is discovered or suspected, leading the state to develop several incentives for redevelopment, including grants and loans available to local units of government.
