An old, polluted paper mill site is getting some fresh attention from Shasta County officials who see it as an economic-development boon — though one also considered a major fixer-upper.

Cleanup of the former Shasta Paper Co. site, closed in August 2001, comes with an estimated price tag of about $3 million, said Jim Pedri, assistant executive officer for the state's Regional Water Quality Control Board's Central Valley area.

Little abatement progress has been made since May 2004, when the 375-acre site sold for $500,001 to Winemucca Trading Company Limited Inc., based in the British Virgin Islands.
