GRAND RAPIDS -- Plans to tear down the former Fifth Third Bank branch and redevelop it for retail and housing in Eastown won approval from the city's Brownfield Redevelopment Authority.

The building is slated to include 16 to 18 apartments geared toward students and ground floor retail space. The project is expected to be LEED (Leadership in Engineering and Environmental Design) certified for its "green" building features.
