MDEQ antes up $2 million toward Parchment project

PARCHMENT -- The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has added 
$2 million to the city of Parchment's paper-mill redevelopment efforts, 
half in the form of a brownfield site reclamation grant and half in a 
low-interest Clean Michigan Initiative brownfield redevelopment loan to 
the city.

The news came Friday, the same day the city and developer Larry Lundine 
were conducting a remote real-estate closing on the city's $1 sale of 
more than 80 acres of former paper-mill property in Parchment.

Crown Vantage Paper Co. closed the Parchment plant in November 2000 and 
the city took over the property the next year.

Lundine, of Overland Park, Kan., is planning to redevelop the property 
and 90 acres to the north in Cooper Township into 350 single-family 
residences, plus retail and office space, parks and trails at a cost of 
$100 million.
