Stamford closes Scofield park after toxic chemicals found Gates locked at Scofieldtown Park By Magdalene Perez Stamford Advocate (CT) May 22, 2009STAMFORD -- As the sun warmed the first hours of Memorial Day weekend Friday afternoon, the playground and tennis court at Scofieldtown Park in North Stamford were deserted. For good reason. Last week, the city shut down the park after a federal test revealed PCBs and other toxic cntaminants in the soil. Now visitors to the small park, across the street from the Smith House municipal nursing home and adjacent to the Scofield recycling center, will find the gates closed and locked. They are not likely to reopen for months, city officials said. The shutdown is in response to a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency report released in December that showed some soil in the park contained contaminants at levels that exceed limits set by the state Department of Environmental Protection, according to a statement Friday from city Operations Director Benjamin Barnes. The test found semivolatile organic compounds and PCBs, materials once commonly used in electric transformers, coolants, and pesticides, but banned in the 1970s after scientists found the compounds are toxic. ...
