Illinois EPA proposal could lead to tougher cleanup rules at dry cleaner
sites
Chicago Tribune July 26, 2009Illinois environmental regulators long assumed spills of toxic solvents from dry cleaners could be safe underground as long as people didn't drink contaminated water or touch polluted soil. But scientific research and experience with several heavily polluted sites now suggests the highly volatile chemical can become a poisonous gas that seeps into basements and wafts up to living rooms. Rules proposed by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency would force landowners and businesses to evaluate health risks from such gases. If adopted, the rules could require more aggressive cleanups at dry cleaners and other sites. ....
